On Saturday, June 1 at 3:37pm Station 62, 64, Engine 63, Dauphin Boat 20, Snyder Boats 80, 90, and Northumberland Boat 536 were dispatched to the Susquehanna River for a water rescue in the area of Ziglers Island for reports of multiple kayaks overturned and multiple people in the water holding onto trees. Boats 20 and 536 launched from the Dalamtia side while 80 launched from the Snyder County side with 90 being RIT boat if needed. Crews made contact with an individual who was the 911 caller in the river who tried to help locate the others. Crews on the boats heard the individuals blowing whistles which assisted in locating them much quicker. In all Boat 20, 80, and 536 pulled 9 individuals from the water and shuttled them back to shore without injuries along with their kayaks and belongings. Great response by the boats and all crews involved to locate and find everyone quickly and safetly bring them to shore.
Kayackers went between 2 larger islands down a trough and once in the trough a tree covered their entire access. Being unable to paddle back upstream they were sucked into the tree which overturned their kayaks and left them in the water. We cant stress the importance of life safety equipment when in the river as it is still high and has a strong current. Lucky all individuals had life vests on and some had whistles otherwise it could have been a much different outcome with the river level. We are glad everyone is home safe tonight and great job by all the water rescue crews. Pictures from Lower Mahanoy Fire Company-Station 62.
